Three Amigos United

This past weekend was refreshing: the weather was nice, the fishing was good, and the company was great. Raymond and I fish together fairly regularly since I moved back to Houston this past summer but we’ve missed one of the fishing trio that we grew accustomed to growing up. Since Sam and I moved away for college fours years ago we haven’t had many opportunities to fish together as a group. Sam hasn’t been fishing much this year and leading up to his arrival the fishing had on fire so it seemed like things were lining up perfectly for a great day on the water.

The fishing was great but the catching was only good. The day was a marathon of sorts. We were on the water before sunup and off after dark. We also covered 12+ miles of water but not without reason. It seemed like everywhere we went we saw fish and lots of them. We saw backing redfish from the time we started fishing right up til the time we called it quits due to the extremely low water levels.

We saw and had plenty of shots at fish but the fish were extremely spooky although they were feeding aggressively. We had almost no wind the entire time on the water so every sound we made caused the fish to be weary of our presence. And the abundance of bait also made things tough. We saw more bait than we’ve ever seen in the area. There was bait getting busted up everywhere. It sounded like it was raining the all day long due to the amount of nervous bait bubbling on the surface.

We ended the day with 12 reds up to 28.5″. We had plenty of shots at fish all day long and managed to lose a handful as well. We caught all of our fish on 3″ Gulp shrimp. We had to make long casts about the max of our casting abilities to prevent from spooking fish. We had to cast past the fish in the direction it was moving and wait for it to get close and slowly bump the lure off the bottom to entice a bite.

It’s not often that we all get to fish together anymore seeing as our lives have gone in different directions as we get older. It was good have the three of us back together for a reunion just like old times. Always a good time and always entertaining.

I also filmed a bunch of video that I’ll post up when I get a chance to edit it. I’m still working on editing all the video I took the other day as well.

Big fish of the day 28.5″

Most of the fish we caught were feeding so aggresively were coughing up bait when we landed them…
