Me, Travis, and a five campers stayed overnight on a floating cabin in the middle of the bay last night. The cabin has a large halogen light and sits on a deep channel, so it draws the attention from a plethora of baitfish, which in turn brings in the game fish species, like trout and redfish.
Although the size of fish isn’t world-class or even table-fare quality most of the time, the kids have lots of fun catching the countless number of speckled trout, redfish, and different types of baitfish that swim through the lights. Some of them have more fun catching bait (shrimp, ballyhoo, crabs, and needlefish) than actually catching the gamefish themselves. For most of the kids a tug on the end of the line or catching bait in the net is enough to create excitement and put a smile on their face.
We stayed up until the wee hours of the night catching fish all night and then morning snuck up on us as quick as night fell the evening before. Due to our all night fishing extravaganza, we all overslept and got a late start on the flats this morning. As soon as we proceeded to traverse the flats we located mid-slot redfish using topwaters (Spooks and Skitterwalks) in 2′-3′ over grass. As you can tell from the pictures below there were plenty of smiles and happy campers after last night and this mornings trip.
