The second stop of the Lone Star Kayak Series was last weekend. A few anglers were able to bring heavy weights to the scales. The reoccurring theme among the participants is lots of spooky fish. Most of the anglers saw more fish than there were able to catch. Despite the awesome conditions the full moon made things difficult for many of the participants.
I can attest to funky fish behavior. I spent a few hours on the water before heading to weigh-in to help out. I saw what many other anglers saw. I spooked over 50 redfish before I was able to finally convince one to eat. I made perfect presentations at countless fish with lures and flies with no luck until I found a few actively feeding schools. After a frustating start to the morning it turned out to be a good day afterall. I landed about a dozen fish up to 6 lbs.
The highlight of the day was chasing a large school of reds down a small drain that was about the same width as my canoe. At one point I hooked a fish out of the middle of the school and it looked like a bomb exploded in the middle of the drain in front of me. Redfish went flying all over the place. Several of them even landed on the bank before shimming back into the water. It was a sight to see. I wish I would have captured the mayhem on video, but I still haven’t figured out a way to rig my camera on my canoe. That’s my next project.
