I have not been very motivated lately due to the lackluster fishing and conditions on the Upper Coast. This winter has been slow compared to the last few years. We’ve had plenty of warm weather and rain here in Southeast Texas. I’m not complaining. Our bays desperately need the precipitation.
Last year our bait hatches and migrations were significantly affected by the lack of freshwater run-off. The creeks and rivers were holding extremely high salinity water, which isn’t good for the estuaries that are the birthplace to many juvenile bait species. This spring is shaping up to be a good one, although I’m not looking forward the gale winds that will accompany the season change.
I’m ready for the bait and redfish to show back up shallow and the marsh bite to get consistently good. I’m not giving up on trout yet though. There’s a ten pounder out there waiting for me to catch her. We can all dream, can’t we?
I’m headed to Baffin this weekend for the first time. The last bay in state I haven’t fished. If anyone have any inside info feel free to send me a message. I’m going down there completely blind to see what I can put together.
Here’s some photos I took of few friends with some nice trout caught in the last few weeks….
