Follow the Gulls

Today was a sight fisherman’s dream. Schools of redfish in shallow water gorging with reckless abandonment completely oblivious to their surroundings. Each school’s location given away by the eye in the sky. Flocks or single seagulls hovering above a particular locale revealed the whereabouts of active schools from several hundred yards away.

John, Raymond, and I found countless schools this morning in less than 1′ water over mud and scattered shell feeding on shrimp and shad. Fishing was flat out ridiculous at times. At one point, while parked up on some exposed shell, we had schools of redfish swimming all around us. The bite turned on at 9:30am and lasted until a little after noon.

The water level has finally come down from abnormally high levels we’ve had the last couple of months. We fished a strong outgoing tide all morning until about noon when the tide started to rip back in. We caught fish on topwaters, plastics, and on the fly. We ended the day with 20+ redfish up to 25″. Nothing big but plenty of sight fishing opportunities and we all had a blast. John also captured some video and photos that I’ll post later. Enjoy…
